Week 11 – Start a Worm Farm

Start a worm farm

Starting a worm farm is a simple action you can take towards sustainability and its heaps of fun!!
You can use your kitchen scraps to feed worms, produce incredible worm compost for the garden and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

Did you know that food scraps that go to landfill break down in an anaerobic (without air) process and produce methane. This is bad because methane is over 20 times worse than CO2 in terms of its global warming impact. Worm farming or composting at home is an aerobic (with air) process that involves the gradual natural breakdown of organic material. It can result in substantial reductions in CO2 emissions.

Worm farming is an opportunity for Australian households to take action on climate change and produce some brilliant organic fertiliser in the process. What’s more it’s so easy – if your don’t have a worm farm give it a go, you’ll love it 🙂

Wonderful Worms!

Worms are an often forgotten resource in our gardens. They are rarely seen, quietly working away in our soils. We all know worms are good for the soil, but did you know that worms improve the soil structure, break down organic material and make nutrients more available to plants? Worms also improve the aeration and drainage of the soil.

How to make a worm farm

Home made worm farm built from recycled materials

Starting a worm farm is easy to do, great for the garden and reduces waste. In a worm farm, composting worms eat left over kitchen scrapes and turn it into nutrient rich fertiliser. The worm castings contain easily accessible nutrients for plants and can be used as a soil improver. A worm farm will also produce ‘worm juice’ which is liquid gold for the garden, diluted with water 1:10 it’s used as a liquid fertiliser for your plants. By turning your organic waste into a free fertiliser, you also help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases being produced in landfill!

The Easiest Pets to Keep

Worms are incredibly easy pets to keep, they require very little maintenance, and kids love them!

You really can’t go wrong, keep them fed with food scraps and make sure the worm farm is kept moist. You can start a small worm farm at home from scrap materials very cheaply – To find out how to start your own simple worm farm watch our video.
